There are several things you must know about breast feeding while going for breast implants. It has been found out that woman who have breast implants can face problems with regards to breastfeeding as these women face problems with regards to lactation and other complications.

As per IOM or Institute of Medicine, a women who goes for breast implant is three times more likely to suffer from lactation insufficiency or inadequate milk supply. This could cause problems for the child.

In case a woman goes for breast implant surgery there is a great risk that she will not be able to provide breast milk for her baby. Women who have undergone breast implant surgery by an incision of the nipple area are most likely to face problems. These women were at five times higher risk of insufficient milk supply.

Ability to breastfeed your child with breast implants depends to a huge extent on the amount of damage done to your areola and nipples. Certain types of incisions could lead to milk ducts damage and nerves which are known to stimulate milk production.

Women with breast implants going for breast feeding should keep the following things in mind:

In case milk has been delivered a breastfeeding women would experience increased breast inflammation with intense fever, chills and pain. In case smile incision is made around the areola it could increase the risk for problems.

Nerve damage around the areola leads to make or breaks situation. Nerves are necessary for breastfeeding as they cause the brain to release oxytocin and prolactin which are hormones affecting milk production. You must keep one thing in mind that an intact milk duct system improves chances of breastfeeding.

Placement of implants also affects milk production therefore you must also discuss this with your surgeon. Not every woman is able to breastfeed naturally even though they have had augmentation or not but breast implants don’t any effect on the quality of milk produced by them.
