BREAST LIFT WITH IMPLANTS
While doing breast augmentation plastic surgeons are sometimes faced with breasts which are experiencing some form of sagging. It is a commonly held but inaccurate belief that breast implants tend to lift a sagging breast.
Even though breast implants do make your breasts appear fuller it does not change the horizontal position of the nipple on the chest wall.
This is truly visible in before and after photographs of breast augmentation results in the profile or lateral views. Even though breast implants will make your breasts look much fuller and give its mound a nice shape it would not affect sagging as the nipple would still be located on the lower pole of the breast and point downward.
A combination of breast augmentation and mastopexies tend to differ in the degree of lifting which needs to be done.
Even though a certain degree of lifting and scar may be ideal the degree of lift that needs to be done is guided by how much scarring a patient is willing to go for.
The scar burden needs to be balanced against the severity of sagging. Breast implants tend to help a sagging breast and might lessen the degree of breast lift which may be needed. Larger breast implants are known to fill out loose skin but still don’t lift the nipple too much.
In some breast implant surgeries one might find that some degree of sagging is better as compared to any type of a mound scar. In other cases the scars are more tolerable and the need for improving the sagging is more important as compared to a residual scar. Scar education is important in case of mastopexies and this is best understood by viewing pictures of both fresh and mature scars from such procedures.
